What is visa and what kinds of visas are there?

Under the section 29, Migration Act, VISA is a non-citizen permission to do either or both of the following, a) travel to and enter Australia; b) remain in Australia. So you need to have a valid visa to enter and remain in Australia if you are not a citizen of Australia.

Visas are divided into two kinds.

1. permanent visa, to remain indefinitely and
2. temporary visa, to remain a) during a specified period; or b) until a specified event happens; or while the holder has a specified status.
Permanent visa types are based on selection criteria; 1. Business 2. Family 3.Humanitarian 4.SkillSelect (General Skilled Migration)
Temporary visa types are based on purpose; 1. Visit 2. Study and 3. Work.
Additionally, bridging visas are there as a connections among visas.
