Schools

Schools in Australia encourage students to develop communication skills, self discipline, problem solving abilities and respect for themselves, others and society. All schools take their responsibilities to students very seriously. Students are provided with support, supervision and regular encouragement.

Australian schools are places of personal, intellectual, and emotional growth. Teachers give students regular feedback about their studies and in-class behaviour. Parents have open access to information regarding their child’s progress and well-being.

Schooling in Australia starts with a kindergarten or preparatory year followed by 12 years of primary and secondary school. Australia offers government and non-government schools. Some schools are co-educational, teaching boys and girls; others teach girls only or boys only.

Excellence in Australian schools

Australian schools benchmark all subjects, teaching practices and resources, including technology, against international best practice. This practice ensures students are prepared for future study, not only in Australia, but anywhere in the world.

Australian schools are already world leaders in the application of information and communications technology to education. Our classrooms are world-class in terms of improving quality, awareness and access to IT resources and training for students and their teachers.

A wide range of initiatives and programs in Australian schools are improving the learning environment and enabling students to achieve their full potential. For example, the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) shows Australian schools outperforming those of other English speaking countries in the key areas of science and mathematics.

School scholarships

Scholarships are provided by many schools, and cover part or all of the tuition fees. However, there is intense competition for these scholarships from Australian and international students.

Most scholarships are awarded for academic ability. Applicants may be asked to sit for scholastic tests, most likely in the areas of mathematics, written expression and humanities. Scholarships are also available for highly talented students, for example in music, the performing arts or sport.

Schools can either set their own exams for scholarship students or participate in tests developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Tests are usually held in May the year before the scholarship is offered. These are generally conducted in Australia, however, there are some overseas examination centres for the ACER test.

You can inquire directly with the school or through your local Australian education adviser if scholarships are available at the schools you are interested in attending.
